Pet First Aid Month: What Every Pet Parent Should know
Every April, Pet First Aid Awareness Month comes around as a good reminder that being a great dog parent isn’t just about the fun stuff. The walks, the snuggles, the daycare pickups where your dog nearly knocks you over with excitement. It’s also about being ready for the moments that catch you off guard.
The good news? A little preparation goes a long way. And most of it is simpler than you think.
Why Every Dog Parent Should Have a Pet First Aid Plan
Your vet is always your first call in any serious situation. But there are plenty of everyday moments that happen at home, on a walk, or at the park where having a few basics on hand makes a real difference. A scrape from the trail. A run-in with a bee. Something they ate off the ground that definitely wasn’t food. These are the moments where a prepared pet parent feels calm and confident instead of scrambling.
You don’t have to be an expert. You just have to be a little ready.
How to Build a Pet First Aid Kit at Home
A small container or zip bag with these basics covers a lot of common situations:
- Your vet’s phone number and the nearest 24-hour emergency animal clinic, because when you need these, you really don’t want to be searching for them
- Gauze pads and self-adhesive bandage wrap
- Saline solution for flushing eyes or minor wounds
- A digital thermometer (a healthy dog runs between 101 and 102.5 degrees)
- Tweezers and a tick removal tool, especially as the warmer weather returns
- A copy of your dog’s vaccination records and any known medical conditions or allergies
- ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center number: (888) 426-4435, worth saving in your phone before you need it
Keep one kit at home and consider a smaller version in your car or your bag if your dog comes along on adventures. With spring here and summer right around the corner, there’s no better time to put one together.
Your Dog Is in Good Hands at Dog Daycare Too
When your dog is with us at Fun Fur Pets, preparedness is something we take seriously behind the scenes so you don’t have to think about it. Our team trains regularly, stays current on canine health and safety, and knows how to spot the early signs that something might be off. For dog owners who want peace of mind during the day, we’re paying attention all day, every day.
But at home, that’s your territory. And a little preparation there makes you an even better partner in your dog’s overall wellbeing.
Happy Pet First Aid Awareness Month. Go build that kit. 🐾
