The “Look” or Attention command is used to focus a dog’s attention on their owner. I use the “Look” command as a foundation for working with Reactive Dogs. The “Look” command is the first and most important command you learn in the Fun Fur Pets Training Program Reactive Dog Class.
- Use a high value treat. Show your dog the treat and say “Look”. When dog looks at the treat mark it with “Good” or your mark word and give a treat. Do not give the “lure” treat.
- Repeat this several times moving the treat towards your face each time.
- Work on getting the dog to make eye contact with you on the “Look” command and be sure to Mark and Reward each time.
- Practice this several times a day for no more than 5 minutes each time. As the dog becomes proficient, you can add distractions.
The “Look” command is the basis of training a fearful and/or reactive dog. If you are in the Reactive Dog class, you will use this command almost exclusively for several weeks.
