The socialization of your new furry family member is crucial in shaping them into the adult dog they have yet to become! Here is some great information we found to help you out.
When to Socialize
Ages 7 weeks to 4 months is a prime time for shaping your dogs personality and behaviors. This time period is when you should be focusing the most getting your pup out there. They should be meeting all kinds of different places, people, things and even other dogs.
Why We Socialize
Dogs in general base things on their senses: sight, smell and sounds. These are what you want your puppy to adjust to and be able to handle with ease at all stages of their life. Exposing your puppy to a variety of different stimulants helps in avoiding prolonged fear, aggression and any other negative behavior. These early interactions can also help your pup become more self aware and confident if anything were to ever arise where they may put themselves in any sort of danger.
How To Socialize
1.Introduce to new sights, sounds smells whenever given the opportunity. Download this Puppy Socialization Checklist to help socialize and keep track of socialization progress.
2.Plenty of treats should be handy (this makes it a very positive experience and rewarding for your pup)
3.Have everyone involved in the socializing process, so your pup is used to all different members of your family in these new situations.
4.Get your pup out into public, after doing small exposure…start taking them to new places.
5.Get into a puppy class, for exposure to new dogs and people. Many training and obedience facilities, including Fun Fur Pets, require puppies have their rabies vaccination before a dog can attend classes. For Fun Fur Pets, this is not a choice, it is a requirement of the Health Department.
