As snow and ice season is upon us, there are a few things we need to do to protect our dog’s paws from the cold, ice and mostly the salt found on sidewalks and roads.
First, if your dog is walking outside on sidewalks treated with salt or ice melt, please be sure to wash their paws thoroughly when you return home. The salt treatments can be very hard on their pads. The salt treatments cause discomfort which leads to excessive licking which can lead to sores and sensitive pads.
If your dog is sensitive to the salt or is prone to getting fissures (cracks/cuts on the paw), you can first try a balm such as Musher’s Secret. Musher’s Secret is an “all-natural wax-based cream protects paws from harsh surfaces. Protect paws from sand, hot pavement, ice and salt with all natural 100 percent wax-based cream. When applied to pads and between toes, dries in seconds to form a semi-permeable shield. Non-toxic, non-allergenic, non-staining formula can be used weekly or as needed to prevent abrasions, burning, drying and cracking. Perfect for mushing, hunting, walking or before any outdoor activity. Acts as an invisible boot to prevent potential paw problems.” You can apply it a few times a week. Musher’s Secret can be purchased locally at Wags and Whiskers in the Village Shopping Center, La Crosse, WI or online.
There are many different styles of dog booties on the market. I have tried many for different purposes and with a variety of results. When I am using booties just to protect my dog’s paws against the harsh salt, snow and ice, my preference is for the simple, then booties musher’s use on their dogs. There are many sites that sell them. Here are a few sites:
